TRAFFIC was held up when Oxford's Eastern Bypass was closed for half an hour over fears that a pedestrian may fall from a bridge over the road.

Police were called to the dual carriageway on Saturday after reports of a woman having crossed the safety barrier on the bridge, at 4.33pm.

Police closed a section of the ring road until about 5pm while the incident was dealt with.

The incident caused delay to Oxford United fans leaving the club's FA Cup clash with Exeter City. Supporters at the Kassam Stadium were warned to avoid the Heyford Hill area because of congestion.

A statement from Thames Valley Police said: "The road was closed for a short time while this was dealt with. The incident was safely resolved and the road was re-opened at around 5pm.

"Given the nature of incident, we would not provide any further details."
