Richard Madeley criticised for commenting on Duchess of Cambridge's figure: 'Tiny, tiny waist'

Richard Madeley has caused a stir with Good Morning Britain (GMB) viewers after making a remark about the Duchess of Cambridge's body size.

The presenter was discussing the Earthshot Prize Awards event, which was launched by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, with fellow presenter Susanna Reid on GMB today.

After a video clip summarising the details of the inaugural ceremony, which aims to find sustainable solutions to repair the planet, the show cut to Madeley whose first comment was about the Duchess' figure.

"She’s so slim isn’t she, Kate," Madeley remarked, to which Reid, seeming somewhat surprised replied: "She is, isn’t she?"

Madeley went on to add: "Tiny, tiny waist," as his co-host let out what seemed to be an uncomfortable giggle before commenting: "She looks absolutely terrific."

While the presenters then moved on with the remainder of the show, the moment didn't go unnoticed with viewers with many expressing their disappointment about the comment.

"Richard is it really necessary to make personal comments about Kate like that? #gmb," one viewer asked on Twitter.

Others pointed out that commenting on the Duchess' body shape actually took away from the important focus of the event.

"The Duchess of Cambridge gives an impassioned speech for Earthshot and all Richard Madeley can say is how tiny her waist is," one viewer tweeted. "He immediately trivialises the moment, objectifies her and belittles her contribution. Where’s the anger that was directed at Piers Morgan."

"GMB show a video round-up of last night's Earthshot Prize featuring lots of innovative ideas for saving the planet. Richard Madeley's only response? "Hasn't she [Duchess of Cambridge] got a skinny waist?"," another noted.

"@GMB I cannot believe you employ Richard Madeley whose only comment about Earthshot was about the size of The Duchess of Cambridge's Waist. What an embarrassment," yet another wrote on Twitter.

"@richardm56 more concerned about Duchess of Cambridge's small waist and Jason impersonating him than climate change," yet another disappointed viewer commented.

Guests at last night's event, including the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Emma Watson, were asked to think carefully about what they wore to the first-ever Earthshot Prize ceremony.

William asked all guests at the event to “consider the environment when choosing their outfit".

In a daring fashion-foward look the Duke recycled dark green velvet blazer from Reiss, which he had previously worn to a charity event for Centrepoint in 2019, as well as an old turtleneck and a 20-year-old pair of trousers, the Duchess recycled a £4,290 Alexander McQueen dress which was created for her in 2011.

To further prove their point, the royals arrived at the event in an electric Audi car and no plastic was used to build the stage.

Meanwhile actor Emma Watson, wore a gown made from old bridal dresses, and Dame Emma Thompson, wore a recycled blue suit.
