Return to Paradise's Colin Cartwright star reveals 'dating minefield' before hair transplant
Actor and comedian Lloyd Griffith has opened up about his experience of having a hair transplant and how losing his hair impacted his dating life in particular. Lloyd, 41, who hails from Grimsby is now starring in the Death in Paradise spin-off Return to Paradise based in Australia.
The star, who plays Detective S.C Colin Cartwright at the Dolphin Cove Police Station, opened up in The Guardian about how his thinning hair led to a dating dilemmas and a lack in confidence. Lloyd explained: “Dating was a minefield, too. I’d been on a number of dates with one lady who I quite liked and obviously I hadn’t told her I had the male equivalent of a Wonderbra in my hair.”
Lloyd turned to using magic black sprinkles to make his hair look thicker. He continued to add: “On the day of the date, I popped into John Lewis and bought some dark blue pillow cases, so that if my sprinkles came off during the night she’d not see them when we woke up. I then woke up extra early to head to the bathroom to style my hair in place again.”

Lloyd's hair hadn't been something he'd taken too much notice about before one moment before going on stage. Sitting in a makeup chair before a gig in Manchester, Lloyd was taken aback when a makeup artist sprinkled black powder on before she said it’s so the "lights don’t bounce off your bald patches" - to which Lloyd confessed he felt his "stomach dropped" and recalled the moment felt like he'd been "heckled".
After turning 40, Lloyd decided to hit up some friends who he suspected had a hair transplant to ask questions about the procedure. After looking up different places to do it, Lloyd went to a London clinic.
He admits the day itself was "emotional", but adds that he’ll "think back on it fondly". Lloyd also wrote that it has been the "biggest journey of self discovery". And he’s currently in the healing process where hair begins to "shed", but over the next six months, results should begin to appear.
Return to Paradise stars Anna Samson as DI Mackenzie Clarke and returns this Friday (29 November) at 8pm on BBC One.
The synopsis for episode two reads: "Just before participating in the Dolphin Cove fun run, entrepreneur Curtis Faleafar calls Mackenzie to warn her that many lives are in danger.
"He later collapses, apparently poisoned, and Mackenzie is convinced his warning had some connection to his death. Away from matters of work, she also has to work out a way to stop local bathers taking shortcuts through her property."
