Fresh off her Emmy win for Watchmen—not to mention her Golden Globe nomination for directing One Night in Miami—the supremely talented Regina King has another exciting project in the works: a feature about the indelible Shirley Chisholm.

Here's what we know so far about the film.

It's the realisation of Regina King's decade-long effort.

It took about a decade for King's Shirley Chisholm biopic to get greenlit—and she couldn't be happier that it finally did.

"Shirley Chisholm’s fearless determination has been an inspiration to so many of us, and with this film we hope to inspire many generations to come,” King said in a statement. “To collaborate once again with my friend and mentor, John Ridley, and the team at Participant, makes this decade-long journey even sweeter.”

The actress is the latest star to bring Chisholm to life on our TV screens - Uzo Aduba won an Emmy for her portrayal of the politician in FX and Hulu's Mrs. America. Danai Gurira will play Chisholm in Cherien Dabis's The Fighting Shirley Chisholm, which is currently in production.

John Ridley will write and direct the movie.

Ridley, best known for his Oscar-winning 12 Years a Slave screenplay, will surely do Chisholm's story justice. He said in a statement, "Regina’s passion for bringing a complete and very human portrait of Shirley to life has been evident since literally the day we first met. I’m very thankful to both Regina and Reina trusting me to partner in telling the story of this truly remarkable individual." (Regina's sister, Reina King, is also producing.)

It's still early days.

A production timeline has yet to be announced, so it'll likely be awhile before Shirley hits theatres—but should any news surface about an anticipated release date, we will be sure to update this post.
