Reese Witherspoon has admitted she was "flummoxed" by ex-husband Ryan Phillippe's put-down remark about her "making more money" than him at the 2002 Academy Awards.

The 44-year-old Big Little Lies star recalled the incident when she appeared on the HFPA in Conversation podcast, during which she explained his quip was unplanned and that it left her slightly bewildered.

During the 2002 Oscars, the former couple were presenting an award on stage and when Phillippe opened the envelope to announce the category's winner, he handed the envelope to Witherspoon and remarked: "You make more money than I do [you open it]."

Witherspoon revealed that she had "forgotten that ever happened," before saying: "You're right, he did say that, and no, it wasn't scripted, and he didn't tell me he was going to say that before it happened on air.

"So I was a little bit flummoxed in the moment, too."

Discussing the pressures women face when it comes to success and the "shame" they're often made to feel if they earn more money than their male counterparts, Witherspoon explained: "There's so few women that make a lot of money that sometimes they're shamed for it, and sometimes they are expected to give more and do more and be more to others in the same position that, say, a male movie star would not be expected to.

"But I do think gender norms have changed quite a bit since that moment in 2000 or something."

Witherspoon and Phillippe married in 1999, and share daughter Ava, 21, and son Deacon, 17. The pair split up in 2006, and Witherspoon has since remarried celebrity agent Jim Toth, with whom she has Tennessee, 8.

The Oscar-winning star recently shared a photo of her family huddled together at Christmas on Instagram, and added the caption: "Merry Christmas from our family to yours! *it only took about 1 hour, 2 bribes and 3 retakes to get all these people in one picture *a small Christmas miracle for MOM."
