Pitch Perfect star Rebel Wilson has revealed she faced "push back" from her team after embarking on a "year of health" which saw her lose weight. In a recent interview, the 41-year-old opened up about how her decision to live a healthier lifestyle impacted her career.
"I got a lot of pushback from my own team — actually — here in Hollywood, when I said, 'I'm gonna do this year of health, I really feel like I'm gonna physically transform and change my life.' And they were like, 'Why? Why would you wanna do that?' Because I was earning millions of dollars being the funny fat girl and being that person," she told the BBC.
"Even though I was still very confident being bigger and loved myself — would rock a red carpet being double the size and triple the weight of other actresses — I still felt confident in that," the actor continued. "But I knew deep down inside that some of the emotional eating behaviours I was doing were not healthy."
The Bridesmaids star continued: "Like I did not need a tub of ice cream every night. That was me kind of numbing emotions using food, which wasn’t the healthiest thing.
As for what she thinks triggered her emotional relationship with food, Rebel admitted, "I think it was dealing with not being a natural performer, and having to perform almost every day. And that pressure and that internal stress to be able to perform like that."
Despite transforming herself physically, Rebel emphasised her frustration at how the film industry, and the public, are often more concerned with her weight than her work as an actor. "It’s fascinating. Why are people so obsessed with women, in particular, about their looks?" she questioned. "I know what it’s like to be a woman who is essentially invisible to most people because of not being seen as traditionally beautiful or whatever. It’s crazy to try to fit that. It’s just better to be the healthiest version."
Speaking to Australia's Daily Telegraph earlier this year, she reiterated her point. "In 2019, I had, like, four movies come out, two which I produced and one, Jojo Rabbit, which got nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture," she said. "Yet I get more press the following year when I do nothing except lose weight."
Unfortunately, Rebel's not alone when it comes to scrutiny about her weight. In recent months, Adele's weight loss has also come under the microscope – leading her too, to speak out about the media (and the public's) obsession with her weight versus her talent as a singer.
