The most daring swimwear of them all appears set to return this summer. A-list models – from Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner to Emily Ratajkowski and Hailey Baldwin – have all been flaunting their pert derrières in revealing high-rise bikinis and swimsuits all over Instagram, and now it looks like it will be one of the biggest swimwear trends of the season.

The thong bikini ruled beachwear for decades after its invention in 1974. It conjures up images of Nineties supermodels in brightly coloured two-pieces or the likes of Pamela Anderson in her iconic high-rise Baywatch costume.

However, the audacious piece didn't prove as popular in beachwear for the next couple of decades. In fact, just two years ago, sales of thong underwear among millennials were dramatically down, while youngsters chose instead to wear Granny pants and full-bottomed boyfriend styles instead. Now, it would seem that this might be all about to change, if not with their underwear, at least when it comes to their swimwear.

With such a penchant for naked dresses on the red carpet – last week in Cannes a case in point – it probably isn't all that surprising that young celebrities are choosing to flaunt as much skin as possible when it comes to their swimwear. But if you're not a supermodel in your 20s, is it easy to follow suit?

"Remember that there are always different ways to wear a trend and make it yours," Sarah Jenkins from the bikini brand Heidi Klein told us. "Without going to a zero-coverage, skinny thong, look for bikini bottoms with higher cuts and thinner sides. That will help give the impression of the trend, in a more approachable way."

If you do want to embrace the full look, however, she recommends remembering that "fit and quality are the two most important things in a swimsuit". Make sure you are buying the perfect size for you – for thong styles, opt for larger than you would usually go for, as it is never going to be flattering if it sits too tight.
