Raiders run 'James Harden' audible vs. Chiefs, and Twitter has jokes

James Harden has made his NFL debut.

Kind of.

The Houston Rockets star’s name made an appearance in the form of an audible during Sunday night’s game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Las Vegas Raiders. With the game tied at 14-14 in the second quarter, Raiders quarterback Derek Carr audibled out of a first-down play near midfield, clearly calling the name of the 2018 NBA MVP for NBC cameras and microphones to document.

He then handed the ball off to running back Devontae Booker, who ran up the middle for 6 yards.

So, why James Harden?

The drive ended nine plays later with three points. Twitter, of course had jokes — most of them focused on the number of steps taken and the fact that the play did not involve passing the ball.

Raiders Twitter even got in on the fun.

Outside of Houston, Harden’s isolation game — and lack of playoff success — are popular targets for snarky sports fans. Why the Raiders incorporated his name into their offense is unclear.

But if they’e going to keep it in the playbook, they should probably mix in a few pass plays attached to the audible. You don’t want to be too predictable.
