It's much rarer these days that we get a glimpse of Queen Elizabeth, who recently turned 96, carrying out a public duty (which is entirely fair enough really, given her age and that she's been dealing with some mobility and health issues of late). So, it was a wonderful surprise for all when Her Majesty made an unexpected appearance at Paddington Station, London, yesterday, to open the (much delayed) Crossrail project, the Elizabeth Line.

The Elizabeth Line, which is distinctive from all the other tube and overground services, with it's snazzy purple colour (the colour associated with royalty, no less) will be up and running from 24 May – and initially it was Prince Edward who was set to go along to the plaque unveiling solo.

However, it seems the Queen decided at the last minute that she would also like to be in attendance at the very special occasion.

Following the event, the Royal Family's official Instagram account shared a selection of photos of HRH and Prince Edward and added the caption: "🚆 Celebrating the opening of the Elizabeth Line! Named in honour of The Queen, today Her Majesty and The Earl of Wessex visited Paddington Station ahead of the new line opening to passengers next week.

"The Queen and The Earl met those who have been key to the Crossrail project, as well those who will be running the railway - including apprentices, drivers, and station staff."

And it turns out that a lot of fans all had similar thoughts after spotting the carousel of images, with plenty flooding the comments section with well wishes and remarks saying just how nice it is to see the Queen out and about, and looking smiley to boot.

"Great to see HM again 🥰," wrote one comment, which received over 170 likes, while another person added, "Wonderful to see Her Majesty ❤️".

Many also pointed out how lovely it is to see the Queen and Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex, carrying out their duties side by side.

A third follower noted, "Love HM in yellow 👑🌼🌼🌼 and lovely to see Earl of Wessex supporting her ❤️" and a fourth said, "So good to see the Queen out amongst the public again 🥳🥳🥳".

We can't help but agree, it was a brilliant surprise to see the Queen!
