Last month, Queen Elizabeth II honoured her late husband, Prince Philip, ahead of the anniversary of his death on April 9.

The memorial (The Service of Thanksgiving for the Duke of Edinburgh), saw her joined by other members of the royal family, including Prince William and Kate Middleton, along with their eldest children, Prince George, eight, and Princess Charlotte, six.

Marking the occasion, Her Majesty also subtly paid tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh by wearing green, seemingly hinting to his official livery and the 'Edinburgh Green' used for his staff uniforms and private cars.

She has since turned 96, and ahead of her Platinum Jubilee celebrations, she is understood to be marking her new year of life without any fuss or frills.

Yesterday, the monarch arrived at her beloved Sandringham estate in Norfolk, where, according to the Daily Mail, she is ringing in her birthday in 'unfussy' style.

The Wood Farm that Prince Philip spent most of his retirement is reportedly where the Queen will be greeted by friends and family over the coming days.

To mark the occasion, a photograph obtained by the news outlet, has been released of her standing beside two of her ponies, Bybeck Nightingale and Bybeck Katie.

The photograph was taken in front a magnolia tree last month and released by the Royal Windsor Horse Show, which she's attended annually since 1943.

And the show will be hosting a lavish Platinum Jubilee event with more than 500 horses and 1,000 performers.

A source told the same news outlet: 'It is an event she holds great affection for.'

It's hoped that Her Majesty, who will reportedly limit her upcoming Platinum Jubilee celebrations due to frailty, will be well enough to attend.

Staff are understood to be ‘moving heaven and Earth’ for this to happen and the Queen herself ‘really is absolutely determined to attend’, according to the outlet's source.

Earlier today, Middleton and Prince William shared a sweet family photograph via their Twitter account (@KensingtonRoyal) to commemorate the Queen's birthday.

It shows her and Prince Phillip sat with their Grandchildren, including the couple's children, Prince George, eight, Princess Charlotte, six and Prince Louis, three, on a sofa.

Another photo shared by the royal couple showed them alongside the Queen.

Middleton and Prince William wrote: 'Wishing Her Majesty The Queen a very happy 96th birthday today!

'An inspiration to so many across the UK, the Commonwealth and the world, it’s particularly special to be celebrating in this #PlatinumJubilee year.'
