The Queen has shared the secret to making a traditional gingerbread house, as the Royal kitchens create a step-by-step guide.

The video tutorial was shared to the official Royal Family Instagram account and a full recipe has been added to the Palace website.

In the video, the chefs first create the traditional gingerbread mixture before kneading and rolling it out. Using templates, they carefully cut out each section of the house and decorate with royal icing (of course!).

In the demonstration, intricate designs are created around the windows using a piping bag, while individual stars are decorated to look like snowflakes.

Once decorated to perfection, it’s time to assemble the house on a bed of royal icing. The icing base acts as glue to hold it all together, as well as forming the snowy bed of a festive scene.

A caption alongside the Christmas baking guide read, “In the run up to Christmas, the chefs in the Royal kitchens have shared their recipe for making the perfect Gingerbread House. Make with warming ground ginger and decorate to your own style!”

While the Palace chefs opted for some seriously impressive and intricate decorations, you could follow the guide and embellish it however you choose, using icing, sweets and chocolates.

If you’re in love with the idea of creating a Christmas gingerbread house but less keen on the extra fuss involved with making it, why now try one of these gingerbread house kits instead?

Happy baking!
