Saturday marked the 20th anniversary of 9/11 and the Queen paid tribute to the thousands of people who lost their lives.

Releasing a heartfelt statement, the Queen reflected on the tragic events and revealed that all of those affected were in her and her family’s thoughts and prayers.

Posting on the official Royal Family social media account, the Queen’s poignant message to President Joe Biden read: "As we mark the 20th anniversary of the terrible attacks on 11th September 2001, my thoughts and prayers – and those of my family and the entire nation – remain with the victims, survivors and families affected, as well as the first responders and rescue workers called to duty.

"My visit to the site of the World Trade Center in 2010 is held fast in my memory. It reminds me that as we honour those from many nations, faiths, and backgrounds who lost their lives, we also pay tribute to the resilience and determination of the communities who joined together to rebuild. Events also took place at Windsor Castle on Saturday. In another act of solidarity, a special changing of the guard ceremony took place, during which the US national anthem was played. This mirrored the decision of the Queen to break royal protocol a day after the attacks in 2001, by playing the Star Spangled Banner at Buckingham Palace.

A minute's silence followed after the Band of the Welsh Guards performed the US anthem on Saturday, watched by hundreds who had gathered at Windsor to pay their respects.
