Nigel Reo-Coker has described the transfer window at Liverpool as “shocking” as he feels West Ham signing Mohammed Kudus is a “top buy” and one that the Reds could have made themselves.

Liverpool have struggled somewhat this summer when it comes to transfers. Some moves have been necessary, such as bringing in midfield reinforcements after five players – including Fabinho and Jordan Henderson – left permanently.

But while Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai were signed, the Reds were embarrassed when Moises Caicedo chose Chelsea after a £110million agreement was in place for him to move to Anfield, before Romeo Lavia opted for the Blues as well.

Reo-Coker believes Jurgen Klopp’s side have had a bad time of it this summer, and the signing of Kudus at West Ham is highlighted as a top piece of business that Liverpool could have done for themselves.

“You look at Liverpool and they have had a shocking window,” he told BBC Football Daily.

“For the club that they are and the players that are available on the market.

“You look at West Ham, getting Mohammed Kudus, that is a great buy there, top talent from Europe. You look at Manchester City and Jeremy Doku. Liverpool have the ability to attract these players, but they haven’t been pro-active.”

West Ham are close to confirming Kudus’ arrival, as the winger has completed his medical. Indeed, given they finished 14th in the Premier League last season, the Reds – who finished fifth – should have been able to make that move if they wanted to.

However, they’ve not really been all too invested in making moves for attacking players. They’re well stocked in that department, with the likes of Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota.

Of course, moves for Kudus and Doku are only examples of the types of deals Liverpool could have made had they wanted to.

The general point is a valid one, though. Liverpool are a side that should have a good amount of pulling power, but some of the displays this summer have shown that’s not exactly the case.

They did recently change sporting director, and dropped out of the Champions League for the first time in a few seasons for this campaign.

As such there are reasons for the meagre period; their pulling power could well return in the next few windows, but it’s fair to say this one hasn’t been great.
