Prison officer had sexual relationship with inmate and 'gave birth to his child'

A prison officer had a sexual relationship with a convicted murderer and gave birth to his child, a court has heard.

Kerianne Stephens, 26, was working at HMP Swaleside - on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent - when she started a fling with Louis Tate.

Stephens has admitted misconduct over the months-long relationship with the killer and has been told she faces an immediate jail term.

Tate, who was imprisoned for life in 2010 for the murder of Garry Frater, is believed to be the father of her young child, Maidstone Crown Court heard.

Stephens and Tate engaged in a sexual relationship for several months between September 2018 and January 2019.

Tate was moved to another prison after their relationship was uncovered.

Sentencing was adjourned on Monday so a probation report on Stephens could be prepared.

Judge Philip Statman told her: "Regrettably you must prepare yourself to face an immediate custodial sentence."

He said he would give "anxious consideration" to the child when deciding her sentence.

Stephens was released on bail.

Tate and Stephens were both at the Maidstone court and will appear again for sentencing on 12 November.

Stephens also pleaded guilty to a charge of making unauthorised transmissions from inside a prison, meaning she will no longer stand trial on that charge next year.

Tate had pleaded guilty to the same charge at an earlier hearing.

The killer was jailed for life with a minimum term of 18 years in 2010 for the murder of Mr Frater.

Tate had run the 32-year-old over a year earlier.

Mr Frater was crushed under the car after it accelerated over him and deliberately drove over him again before driving off, the trial heard.

Mr Frater and friends had been followed as they took a minicab home from a club in Watford, Hertfordshire, 10 miles away.
