Princess of Wales told 'Ireland belongs to the Irish' during walkabout
The Princess of Wales was heckled during an impromptu walkabout in Belfast on Thursday, when she was told: "Ireland belongs to the Irish."
The unidentified woman was in the crowd on Antrim Road in north Belfast, where the Princess and Prince William had been visiting a suicide prevention charity.
While shaking hands with the princess, the woman said: "Nice to meet you but it would be better if it was when you were in your own country."
The Princess smiled politely before moving on to another well wisher.
The encounter, which was captured on camera, took place in what is a predominantly nationalist area of Belfast.
The Wales’s received an otherwise warm reception as they were greeted outside the Public Initiative for Prevention of Suicide and Self Harm (PIPS) charity.
It was the couple’s first of three engagements on an unannounced visit to Northern Ireland.
They later received a rapturous welcome in Carrickfergus, Co Antrim, where a crowd of around 3,000 gathered on the seafront to meet them.
The Prince and Princess spent around 40 minutes shaking hands, posing for selfies and chatting as they were handed scores of bouquets, sweets and pictures.
Earlier, William notched up a victory against his notoriously competitive wife when they were taught mixology at Trademarket before racing to see who could make the quickest cocktail.
The couple gamely accepted the challenge before stepping behind the bar and listening carefully to instructions.
Poised to start pouring, the Princess exclaimed: "He’s started," to chuckles from William, and started herself, deftly pouring measures of the various drinks into a cocktail maker to create Up the Lagan in a Bubble.
William remained marginally ahead, shaking the ingredients together, quickly pouring the drink over ice before adding a sprig of mint, and was declared the champion.
One onlooker said: "You could see by his face that he was determined to win that one."
