Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank have named their baby son August Philip Hawke Brooksbank.

Buckingham Palace has released an image of the couple with their baby boy, who was born at the exclusive Portland Hospital in central London at 8.55am on 9 February.

In the picture, the child - the Queen's ninth great-grandchild - is wrapped in blue while being held by his father and clutching his mother's finger.

The caption under the image reads: 'Her Royal Highness Princess Eugenie and Mr Jack Brooksbank have announced that they have named their son August Philip Hawke Brooksbank.

'The couple have been touched by the well wishes they have received on the birth of their first child, and are delighted to share this first photograph as a family.

'The photograph was taken by their midwife during a home visit.'

And Princess Eugenie herself also uploaded the same set of photos, adding: 'We wanted to introduce you to August Philip Hawke Brooksbank.. 💙💙💙⁣

'Thank you for so many wonderful messages. Our hearts are full of love for this little human, words can't express. We are excited to be able to share these photos with you.⁣

'📸 By our wonderful midwife. Thank you to the wonderful essential workers including our midwife who came to discharge our boy.'

August is understood to be named after Prince Albert, whose middle name was Augustus.

The choice of Philip pays tribute to the duke, who is currently staying at King Edward VII's hospital in London after feeling unwell last Tuesday evening.

Hawke is a Brooksbank family name. It was originally a Latin title given to Roman Emperors meaning 'to be revered', and may also be a nod to Princess Beatrice whose birthday falls in August.

The new arrival was born 11th in line to the throne but, following the recent news that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle (who, it has just been announced, will not be returning to royal duties) are expecting a second child, August will move to 12th place.

Congratulations again to the happy couple, and welcome to the world, August.
