Princess Charlotte comforted by Kate Middleton after tripping during Trooping the Colour

Kate Middleton was seen comforting her daughter, Princess Charlotte, after she had a minor slip on the balcony of Buckingham Palace in 2018. While she stood in front of her mum, the Duchess of Cambridge, and her dad, Prince William, waving right on cue, at one point the little royal appeared to stumble backwards - as if she fell off a small step she was standing on.

Charlotte then burst into tears but she was quickly scooped up for a reassuring cuddle by her mum Kate and was soon back on her feet to join in the festivities.

Princess Charlotte was joined by her older brother, Prince George, who was seen grinning and waving at the crowd below as they revelled in one of the most grand Royal events of the year. The ceremony also featured an RAF flypast, which seemed to thrill the young prince, who is set to turn five next month, as he watched the formation of warplanes zoom overhead.

Trooping the Colour, a tradition that has been carried out annually for over 260 years to celebrate the British monarch's birthday, and the parade in 2018 saw participation from more than 1,400 officers and men, along with 400 musicians and 200 horses.

The event became an annual event during King George II's reign and has undergone several changes since then. This iconic celebration showcases British military pomp and pageantry on a grand scale. Its origins can be traced back centuries, with a version of the parade believed to have first taken place during King Charles II's reign.

This year's celebrations are set to be a big one for Kate too as she confirmed she would be celebrating King Charles' official birthday in London, despite still receiving chemotherapy treatment for cancer.

The Princess of Wales confirmed the news herself and released a personal message, in which she said she is making “good progress” in her cancer treatment. She said she has begun to work from home, undertaking meetings with her foundation and Kensington Palace team, and hopes “to join a few public engagements over the summer” but stressed “I am not out of the woods yet”.

Kate explained: "I am making good progress, but as anyone going through chemotherapy will know, there are good days and bad days. On those bad days you feel weak, tired and you have to give in to your body resting. But on the good days, when you feel stronger, you want to make the most of feeling well. On the days I feel well enough, it is a joy to engage with school life, spend personal time on the things that give me energy and positivity, as well as starting to do a little work from home."
