Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie certainly had heads turning when they arrived to the 2011 royal wedding wearing those hats, but they also received a fair share of backlash over the surprising accessory choice. In fact, the criticism was so harsh at one point that it left them very emotional.

"There was a horrible article that had been written about Beatrice and she got really upset," Princess Eugenie said in a recent interview, recalling their infamous fascinators.

"We were just about to step out and she had a bit of a wobble and cried," she added, per Cosmopolitan. "I was looking after her. And then about an hour later, I had a wobble and started crying and Bea was there for me."

For those who don't recall, the sisters wore one-of-a-kind headpieces created by royal-favourite hat designer Philip Treacy, to Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding seven years ago at Westminster Abbey. Eugenie's was a blue headpiece with a massive purple flower topped with a white feather, which she wore with a Vivienne Westwood ensemble. Beatrice's was beige with an upright oval design and ribbon features that matched her nude Valentino Haute Couture dress.

The siblings landed on worst-dressed lists and the Daily Mail called their looks "outlandish," but Beatrice seemed to get the brunt of the backlash. A Facebook page called Princess Beatrice's ridiculous wedding hat was created. (It doesn't seem to be available anymore.)

This year, however, the siblings went the subtler route when choosing their royal wedding hats. Eugenie went for a retro-inspired Gainsbourg dress and Fiona Graham pillbox hat, and Beatrice wore a beaded Roksanda dress with a Stephen Jones hat so minimal it almost looked like a headband.

Beatrice added in the interview that she and Eugenie want to present themselves as working young royals and "real" people who aren't "afraid of putting ourselves out there." It looks like that applies to fashion, too.
