Ahead of the birth of the new royal baby, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are officially splitting royal households and official residences from Prince William and Kate Middleton. This means that everything will be separate now, including the staffs for both couples. In royal family speak, this is a big deal. Per the Daily Mail, William went to his grandfather, 97-year-old Prince Philip, to ask for advice on this significant change.

The Mail said that William wanted to be reassured that this switch-up would be OK, and he turned to Philip because of the more than 70 years he’s been a member of the royal family. He was also looking for an unbiased opinion-something that his grandfather, who is retired from public engagements and fairly removed from anything the young royals are doing-could provide.

Meghan and Harry’s staff will now work out of Buckingham Palace, and they have cut all ties with Kensington Palace, where William and Kate are based. Sara Latham, who was Hillary Clinton’s senior advisor, will now head their communications team.

Last fall, there were rumors that the royal couples were feuding, but when it comes down to it, these logistic changes have been in the works for a while. A source told the Mail that these shifts are to ensure success in the future.

“It’s about placing the two dukes on a permanent footing that ensures changes aren’t needed again [when Charles accedes to the throne and William becomes Prince of Wales].”
