Prince William has admitted that he once bought a gift so terrible for his wife Kate Middleton that she's never let him forget it.

The Duke of Cambridge is likely to be well-versed in buying his wife presents now - after all, they've known each other for nearly 20 years - but early on in their relationship, it wasn't always so easy.

William joined former England striker Peter Crouch for a recording of his podcast on BBC Radio Five Live, and when Peter revealed that he bought model wife Abbey Clancy a raincoat three years running, William said: "I did get my wife a pair of binoculars once - she's never let me forget that.

"That was early on in the courtship that was - think that sealed the deal.

"It didn't go well. Honestly, I have no idea why I bought her a pair of binoculars, it seemed like a good idea at the time."

“I wrapped them. They were really nice,” he continued. “I was trying to convince myself about it. I was like, ‘But these are really amazing, look how far you can see!’”

Luckily, things got better once they were married. The Duke is believed to have given his new wife jewellery for a favourite brand of hers, Kiki McDonough, for their first Christmas together as a married couple.

He's also believed to have bought her her Cartier watch, and various other pieces of jewellery over the years. Seems he's learnt that a bit of sparkle is a failsafe option!
