Prince Philip has passed away at the age of 99, Buckingham Palace have confirmed.

Announcing the sad news on the official Royal Family Twitter account, the palace released a statement saying that the Duke of Edinburgh passed away peacefully at this home at Windsor Castle. It's believed the Queen was at his side.

'It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle,' the statement reads.

The Duke of Edinburgh was due to celebrate his 100th birthday on 10th June. He had recently been discharged from hospital following heart surgery.
