Update 19/02/21: Prince Philip is being kept in hospital over the weekend and into early next week at least, it's been reported. Royal expert Omid Scobie tweeted that the Duke of Edinburgh's doctor had advised his hospital care was best extended.

"Following consultation with his doctor [Prince Philip] is likely to remain in hospital for observation and rest over the weekend and into next week. As we have said previously the doctor is acting with an abundance of caution. The Duke remains in good spirits," the Buckingham Palace source reportedly said.

Original story 17/02/21:

Prince Philip has been taken to hospital as a "precautionary measure" after feeling unwell, the royal family has confirmed. The Duke of Edinburgh, who is 99, was admitted to London's King Edward VII Hospital last night on the advice of his doctor.

It's not clear exactly what the health issue is at this stage, but Buckingham Palace has said the senior royal is likely to remain in hospital for a few days while he undergoes medical observations. Royal correspondent Rebecca English tweeted that the the Duke of Edinburgh was taken to hospital by car and not ambulance. "It was not an emergency admission and the illness is not COVID related," she shared on social media.

The Queen's husband retired from royal duties in the autumn of 2017, and has been largely based on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk ever since. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic and the resulting lockdowns, the royal relocated to Windsor Castle so he could shield along with his wife, Queen Elizabeth.

Last month, both Prince Philip and the Queen underwent COVID-19 vaccinations, with their age giving both priority. The vaccines were administered by a household doctor at Windsor Castle.

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh recently celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary together, after having married on 20 November 1947. To mark the occasion, the royal household released a sweet photo of the couple opening a handmade card by their great-grandchildren, seven-year-old Prince George, five-year-old Princess Charlotte, and two-year-old Prince Louis.

We're wishing Prince Philip a speedy recovery in hospital, so he can return home to the Queen at Windsor Castle as soon as possible.
