Trooping the Colour: Prince Louis wears dad William's sailor outfit 37 years later

The senior members of the Royal Family were all out in full force to kick off celebrations for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s three children joined their mother and step-grandmother today for the first time at the Trooping the Colour royal procession, marking the start of four days of celebrations in honour of the Queen’s 70 years on the throne.
Kate, 40, beamed as she was joined by her three children for the first time, sat opposite her in the Barouche carriage as part of the official royal procession on the way to the parade ground for the Trooping the Colour ceremony.
The first carriage adhered to a coordinating colour palette, with the Duchess of Cambridge in white, the Duchess of Cornwall in blue, and the two eldest Cambridge children shades of blue: Prince George in a navy suit and pale blue tie, and Princess Charlotte in a pale blue dress which matched her brother’s tie.
But it was Prince Louis’ sailor outfit that caught the attention of royal fans as he beamed and waved to the crowds that lined the Mall.
For his first official appearance, the four-year-old royal donned a sailor outfit with a sweet link to his dad.

The youngest of the Cambridge children sat between his siblings in the sailor-style outfit, often reserved for the royal children and based on the style worn by the Royal Navy.
The sailor top and shorts outfit was almost identical to one worn by Prince Louis’ father Prince William when he was a boy in 1985.

The white top features a large collar with a striped navy edging, and a neckerchief beneath the collar.
As is tradition with the royal children, the youngest boys tend to wear shorts for public occasions.
“Trousers are for older boys and men, whereas shorts on younger boys are one of the silent class markers that we have in England,” etiquette expert William Hanson told Harper's Bazaar.

Prince William has been attending the Trooping the Colour ceremony in honour of his grandmother’s official birthday for most of his life, standing on the balcony with his parents, the Prince of Wales and the late Princess Diana.
However, this year the Duke of Cambridge participated in the procession by riding on horseback alongside his father Prince Charles and aunt Princess Annes, sporting his military uniform and a bearskin hat.
