Prince Harry and Meghan Markle - the Duke and Duchess of Sussex – have surprised the world by releasing a beautiful photograph of their daughter Lilibet, to commemorate her first birthday.

The tot – named Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor in honour of her great-grandmother the Queen Elizabeth II, whose childhood nickname was Lilibet growing up – turned one on June 4, 2022.

In London to celebrate the Queen's platinum jubilee, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle decided to have an intimate, private birthday party at Frogmore Cottage, the couple’s home on the Windsor estate, which also served as the occasion for the Queen, 96, to meet her great-granddaughter for the very first time.

Following the private gathering, which reportedly had no official photographers present to capture the moment, the Sussexes have satisfied the eagerly awaiting public with a portrait shot of their daughter instead.

In the snap, Lilibet can be seen sitting on a bed of grass, wearing a pale blue dress, with a cream bow in her flame red hair and smiling for the photographer.

It's the first time there has been an official photograph of her since the Sussexes' Christmas card.

There are very few details of 'casual' first birthday party, but it has been suggested that Claire Ptak – the baker from east London’s Violet Cakes bakery who made the couple's wedding cake – created a cake for Lilibet's big day.

At the weekend Violet Cakes posted a picture to Instagram of a gorgeous cake with pale pink buttercream icing and topped with flowers, which people are speculating could be the creation in question.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have reportedly now travelled back to their home in California with their children, as the platinum jubilee celebrations have come to a close.
