Prince Harry and Meghan granted award for limiting family to two children

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been awarded for limiting their family to two children by UK charity Population Matters.

Population Matters, which campaigns to achieve a sustainable human population, said it was an "enlightened decision" by the pair, who are parents to two-year-old Archie and newborn daughter Lilibet.

The charity sees population growth as a major contributor to environmental degradation, biodiversity loss, resource depletion and climate change.

A spokesman said: "In choosing and publicly declaring their intention to limit their family to two, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are helping to ensure a better future for their children and providing a role model for other families.

"Having a smaller family reduces our impact on the Earth, and provides a better chance for all our children, their children and future generations to flourish on a healthy planet. We commend the Duke and Duchess for taking this enlightened decision, and for affirming that a smaller family is also a happy family."

In 2019, Harry and Meghan revealed they only had plans to have two children to lessen their impact on the environment, telling Vogue that "we should be able to leave something better behind for the next generation".

The duke and duchess were granted the award to mark the UN’s World Population Day today (July 10).

Harry recently returned to the UK for the unveiling of a statue in honour of his late mother, Princess Diana. Harry reunited with his brother the Duke of Cambridge on what would have been Diana's 60th birthday (July 1) at the Sunken Garden at Kensington Palace to reveal the statue they commissioned for Diana.

The palace said that the brothers "hope that the statue will help all those who visit Kensington Palace to reflect on their mother's life and her legacy."
