The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have released a brand new photograph of their eldest son, Prince George, to mark his eighth birthday on Thursday (22 July).

In the snap, shared on Prince William and Kate Middleton's official Instagram account on the eve of his birthday, the young royal beams at the camera.

George looks happy and relaxed, wearing a blue and orange striped polo shirt with matching navy shorts. It's not known exactly where the picture was taken but George is sitting on the hood of a Land Rover, surrounded by fields, so it may well have been shot near the Cambridge family home in Norfolk, Amner Hall.

As has become tradition with official pictures released of the young Cambridges in recent years, the photo was taken by mum Kate, who is known to have an interest in photography.

Alongside the birthday photo of George, the Duke and Duchess' account wrote: "Turning eight(!) tomorrow."

The post has since been flooded with likes and happy messages for young George, with many commenting to say he is looking more and more like dad Prince William as he grows up.

"Looks like William so much," wrote one royal fan, while another added: "He looks so much like his dad!"

A third agreed writing, "Oh my goodness, look how much he resembles his Dad."

Happy birthday, Prince George!
