It didn't feel very long ago that Prince George had his first day at school, being sent off to Thomas' in Battersea, London, with shiny new shoes and oversized backpack. But it seems it could almost be time for the young royal to leave already.

Prince George turned seven this week and at the age of eight, his father, Prince William, went to board at Ludgrove School in Berkshire. When his uncle, Prince Harry, reached the same age, he also joined the boarding school. We know the royal family loves tradition (the Duchess of Cambridge gave birth to all three of her children at the Lindo Wing in London's St Mary's Hospital - the same place where Princess Diana had William and Harry) so will this be a tradition the Cambridges also decide to continue?

It's been an unusual year where school is concerned for Prince George and every other child in the country. When coronavirus struck, home schooling began so the future King hasn't been in school since March. Neither has his younger sister, Princess Charlotte, who is in reception class at the same school. Prince George has just wrapped Year 2, which means he'll be going into Year 3 when he returns in September.

But if William and Kate decide to follow in the footsteps of Prince Charles and Princess Diana by sending their son to boarding school, next year might well be his last at school in London. Both Prince William and Prince Harry attended Ludgrove from the ages of 8 to 13 (Year 4 - Year 8), before transferring to Eton in Windsor for the rest of their secondary education.

Reports suggest Prince George enjoys his current school, with his classmates affectionately calling him the nickname 'P.G'. Speaking toVanity Fair, one of the mothers at the school said the young Prince is "really happy" at school, where he's "popular and has lots of friends". Apparently, "there's very little fuss made about who he is," which he'll probably appreciate as he gets older. George and Charlotte's school takes students right up to the age of 13 so perhaps the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will opt to keep him there to minimise disruption and delay sending him to boarding school a little longer.
