Prince Charles pokes fun at his lack of style at GQ Awards
The Prince of Wales received the Editor’s Lifetime Achievement Award for Services to Philanthropy at the 2018 GQ Awards in London, on Wednesday night.
The accolade is in recognition of almost 50 years of Prince Charles’ charitable work. He is patron of more than 400 organisations and set up The Prince’s Trust back in 1976, which helps vulnerable young people get their lives on track.
To date, The Trust has reached more than 825,000 young people with three in four achieving a positive outcome – moving into education, employment or training.
The future King joked as he accepted the trophy on stage at the Tate Modern ceremony: “This is something I can throw at a burglar if he comes in.”
He added: “First of all I really wanted to apologise for being wrongly dressed. When they first announced I was winning the MOTY award I felt sure it most have been some kind of ill-deserved fashion award. In fashion terms I’m like a stopped clock, I’m fashionable once every 25 years.”
He also made a quip about not following the black-tie dress code: “I feared none of you would be able to compete with my snazzy dinner jacket.”
“I have always believed that living on a finite planet means we have to recognize that this puts certain constraints and limits on our human ambition in order to maintain the viability of the planet.”
