Prince Charles and Camilla have received their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, the Royals announced this morning. A Clarence House spokesman said: “The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall have had their first Covid-19 vaccinations.”

At 72 and 73, respectively, Charles and Camilla are considered to be at high risk for the virus, and as the UK is currently offering vaccines to those 70 and over, the Royal couple received their dose along with the rest of their age group. In mid-December, when the vaccine rollout was in its early stages, Charles suggested that he would wait for his turn, saying he was “way down the list” when visiting officials at a vaccination centre, according to the Royal correspondent Rebecca English.

Earlier this year, Buckingham Palace announced that Queen Elizabeth, 94, and Prince Philip, 99, had received a first dose. No further members of the Royal Family have confirmed getting the vaccine.

Last spring, the Prince of Wales contracted Covid-19 and became one of the first high-profile individuals to be diagnosed with the virus. He subsequently followed guidelines at the time and self-isolated for one week. Camilla did not contract the virus, but as a precaution, she self-isolated for two weeks, also in accordance with recommendations.

Charles’ son Prince William – who was also diagnosed with the virus last year, but chose not to tell the public about it for months – has spoken about his father’s illness. “I have to admit at first I was quite concerned,” William said last April. “He fits the profile of somebody of the age he’s at, which is you know fairly risky, and so I was a little bit worried.”

He continued: “But my father has had many chest infections, colds, and things like that over the years, and so I thought to myself if anybody is going to be able to beat this it’s going to be him.” Indeed, Charles went on to make a full recovery.
