Princess Beatrice’s Daughter Might Receive a Title Even Though Her Sister Eugenie’s Son Did Not
We already know Princess Eugenie’s son, August, didn’t receive a royal title. But what about Princess Beatrice’s newborn daughter?
The Princess of York and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi welcomed their first child together over the weekend. The couple announced the exciting news in a message on Twitter, writing, “So delighted to share the news of the safe arrival of our daughter on Saturday 18th September 2021, at 23.42, at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, London. Thank you to the Midwife team and everyone at the hospital for their wonderful care.”
As it turns out, Princess Beatrice’s baby will likely obtain an official title in the not-too-distant future. However, it’s not what you think, since the moniker won’t have anything to do with the British royal family. Instead, it all comes down to Princess Beatrice’s husband.
You see, Mozzi’s family is considered Italian nobility. Although their titles haven’t been used in any major way since Italy became a republic in 1946, they still honor some traditions. (Think of them as royals who don’t have to carry out any official duties.)
Since Mozzi’s official title is Count, the baby will likely be granted an equally prestigious moniker. Since the newborn is a girl, she would be given the title of Nobile Donna (AKA “Noble Woman”).
If you’re wondering why Princess Beatrice’s baby will receive an Italian—not a British—royal title, you should know there are multiple reasons. First of all, Princess Beatrice is a non-working royal, which is why she’s not obligated to carry out official duties like Prince William and Kate Middleton. And secondly, official titles are typically passed down from the father’s family, as Hello! magazine points out.
It’s for this reason that Princess Eugenie’s son, August, doesn’t have a royal title. (Because his dad, Jack Brooksbank, doesn’t have one either.) The only exception would be if Queen Elizabeth were to go out of her way to rank Brooksbank and Mozzi. In that case, Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice’s children would be eligible for a British royal title after their dads are sworn in.
It’s not what we expected, but hey, a title’s a title.
