Primark has issued a recall for a pair of children's leggings over fears they may pose a potential choking hazard.

The leggings feature novelty cats on the knees and the bows on the cats' heads present the hazard, as it's come to light they may become detached.

The high street store has recalled all leggings with the product number 86503. These were sold across the UK from 8 November 2016 to 22 February 2017 and customers will receive a full refund – even if you no longer have the receipt.

A Primark spokesperson said, 'Primark takes the safety of our customers, and the quality of our products, very seriously indeed. We can confirm that we are recalling a child's novelty cat legging, for health and safety reasons. A full refund is being offered to all customers.'

The brand also released a full statement, which said, 'Through our on-going due-diligence programme it has come to our attention that the Novelty Cat Legging detailed above does not meet the Primark usual high standards for safety. We have found a potential issue with the security of the bow attachment within the product that may become detached and present a potential choking hazard. With the safety of our customers at the forefront of our minds we are inviting you to return this item for a full refund.

Sara Benwell, Consumer Editor at Good Housekeeping, said, 'Primark have taken the decision to recall their popular children's novelty cat leggings due to concerns that decorative bows present a choking hazard.

'The concern is that the bows are not attached strongly enough and that there's a chance children could choke on them if they fall off. So it's reassuring that Primark have been quick to issue a recall after the discovery of the fault. 'There's no need for parents to be alarmed. But anyone who has purchased Primark's Novelty Cat Leggings should return them to store. Primark have promised to make a full refund even if parents don't have a receipt.

'The leggings were sold between November 8th 2016 and 22nd Feb 2017, so if you shopped at Primark during this time, make sure to check whether you purchased the affected products.'
