After conquering 2020 - during a pandemic - with the success of Euphoria still lingering and a record-breaking Best Actress Emmy award to top it off, Zendaya's upcoming project looks to be one of her bravest and most exciting to date.
Malcolm & Marie stars John David Washington as Malcolm and Zendaya Coleman as Marie. With a trailer and first look images recently dropping and a confirmed release date, the film is attracting all kinds of hype.
Here's everything you need to know:
Who are the Malcolm and Marie cast?
The film stars just two actors: Washington and Zendaya.
Zendaya made waves in 2019 and 2020 after playing lead character Rue in Euphoria, a Skins-esque series following a group of young people as they try to navigate their path in the world while dealing with issues like drug addiction, sex, social media and more. Zendaya won an Emmy in September 2020 for her powerful performance of Rue, who is introduced in the first episode leaving rehab and returning to school despite clearly not having full grasp of her addiction. The role was worlds away from Zendaya's origins on the Disney channel and later in super hero movies like Spiderman and musicals like The Greatest Showman.
Washington (the son of Denzel) had a breakout role in the Oscar-winning 2018 film BlacKkKlansman before heading to the big screen in 2020 via Christopher Nolan's Tenet, the third highest-grossing film of the year in the UK.
Malcolm & Marie is the brainchild of Euphoria creator Sam Levinson, who directs the film.
The movie was filmed during the Covid-19 pandemic and made headlines at the time as the majority of movie and TV studios had paused production and not yet resumed filming. Covid-safe requirements were enacted, with the cast and crew kept particularly small in size. Both actors also quarantined together and underwent regular Covid-19 tests.
Speaking to ELLE UK as she covered our December 2020 issue, Zendaya elaborated on how the creative process was formed during lockdown: 'Sam [Levinson] is like family to me. I talk to him almost every day and night. Sometimes we talk about Euphoria, and sometimes we just talk about life or whatever. So we got this idea that we could do a movie in quarantine safely with a small number of people.
'We used some crew members from Euphoria who didn’t have a job because filming had stopped. I was fascinated with the idea of shooting a film with just two characters. It was like a play. It was challenging for all of us, because it was shot in just one space. We all had to quarantine together, and there were a million Covid-19 tests and nobody was able to leave the property that we were staying on. But that was great, in some ways, because it allowed us to workshop and really dig into the material while we were there.
'It was an actor’s dream. But it was also a little nerve-racking. When you have an idea, and you’re putting your own money into it – I mean, I was literally using my own clothes on set and doing my own hair and make-up – it’s hard not to get a little bit insecure. Like, ‘Oh my gosh, am I really doing this?’ It was one of the first times I just went for something, and I’m so grateful and proud of it. Working with Sam, obviously, and Marcell [Rév, Euphoria’s cinematographer] was really special, but then John David Washington is just so brilliant and such a wonderful person.'
What is Malcolm and Marie about?
The movie chronicles Malcolm and Marie's relationship over one night, as the couple return home after Malcolm, a filmmaker, holds a successful premiere.
On a high (and looking incredible having attended a premiere), the couple's world suddenly comes crashing down and the evening descends into turbulence 'as revelations about their relationships begin to surface, testing the strength of their love'.
Described as an ode to Hollywood romance, this modern twist is also ushering in a new kind of Hollywood romance movies.
Does Malcolm and Marie have a trailer?
Yes the trailer dropped earlier in January on YouTube and has already amassed 1.6 million views.
From the looks of it, the film has been shot in black and white, which only adds to the passion between Zendaya and Washington, in addition to its classical Hollywood influences. As the trailer explains though: 'This is not a love story, it is the story of love.'

Does Malcolm and Marie have a release date?
Yes, it's one of many big name-starring films championed by Netflix in 2021 and is arriving on the platform on February 5, 2021.
