A new American electric vehicle startup called Slate Auto has made its debut, and it's about as anti-Tesla as it gets. The three-year-old startup revealed its vehicle during an event Thursday night in Long Beach, California, and promised the first trucks would be available to customers for under $20,000 with the federal EV tax credit by the end of 2026. The event comes just a few weeks since TechCrunch revealed details of Slate Auto's plans to enter the U.S. EV market, build its trucks in Indiana, and that the enterprise is financially backed by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

Exclusive-China's Leapmotor to supply EV platform to Hongqi, also in talks with Ferrari
SHANGHAI (Reuters) -Leapmotor has struck a deal with Chinese state-owned automaker FAW to deliver an electric vehicle platform that will be used to drive overseas sales for Hongqi, an emerging national champion, executives from both companies said. Leapmotor, a profitable upstart automaker in China's crowded EV market, will supply the underpinnings for a new EV model to the country's oldest auto brand, which got its start supplying sedans for Communist Party leaders and emerged as a fast-growing premium brand in recent years. The agreement represents a win for Leapmotor, which has partnered with Stellantis and created waves with its recent rollout of an all-electric B10 SUV equipped with smart-driving features and lidar sensing technology for less than $18,000.

India's Delhi plans to curb gasoline car sales, ban gas-guzzling bikes to shed polluter tag
NEW DELHI (Reuters) -India's capital New Delhi plans to limit gasoline and diesel-powered cars a family can buy as well as ban sales of fuel-guzzling motorbikes and scooters, according to a draft policy aimed at cleaning up one of the world's most polluted cities. Under Delhi's new electric vehicle policy, the city government will also waive some local taxes on the purchase of hybrids, putting them on par with concessions given to EVs, while imposing a new levy of 0.5 rupees ($0.0059) on every litre of petrol sales, according to the 74-page draft seen by Reuters. Delhi launched the first phase of its EV policy in 2020 which helped boost the share of electric models to 12% of all new vehicle sales, including motorbikes and cars, in 2024.

Nissan's shares rise after restructuring loss heralds turnaround
TOKYO (Reuters) -Nissan saw its shares rise almost 2% on Friday after it flagged a record loss due to a massive reduction in the value of its assets and hefty restructuring fees - costs that appeared aimed at clearing the decks for a badly needed turnaround. Japan's third-largest automaker is fighting to win back market share after declining sales in major markets such as the United States and China. At the same time, it is significantly exposed to U.S. import tariffs on foreign-made cars given that the U.S. is its biggest market and many of the vehicles it sells there are made in Japan or Mexico.
