In the run up to Halloween each year, a number of bad taste costumes tend to do the rounds. And the first of this year’s bunch is already in – a costume fashioned on Caitlyn Jenner.
Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock this past year you’ll know that the Olympian (and Kardashian-Jenner family member) made the incredibly brave transition from Bruce to Caitlyn Jenner – but one costume appears to make a mockery of the reality star’s journey.

The unisex, and arguably transphobic, costume is based on Caitlyn’s iconic Vanity Fair cover and comes with a sash reading ‘Call Me Caitlyn’ – in case anyone is unsure who the person wearing the getup is supposed to be.
Many people have voiced their outrage at the costume, deeming it as inappropriate and saying it’s crossed a line. Yes, Halloween costumes are ridiculous and just a bit of fun, but what happened to inoffensive witches, zombies and pumpkins?
A Change.org petition directed at Spirit Halloween, one of the retailers stocking the costume, is already racking up signatures to have the costume recalled.
Spirit Halloween maintains that the costume celebrates Caityln, with Lisa Barr, the brand’s senior director of marketing saying, “At Spirit Halloween, we create a wide range of costumes that are often based upon celebrities, public figures, heroes and superheroes.”
“We feel that Caitlyn Jenner is all of the above and that she should be celebrated. The Caitlyn Jenner costume reflects just that.”

But Addison Rose Vincent, who describes herself as a ‘Transfeminine Genderqueer Activist’ and started the petition deems it “transphobic”.
“We demand that you revoke your ideas and production of a Caitlyn Jenner costume for Halloween,” the petition’s description reads. “With a reputation of sexist, racist, and culturally appropriative costumes, we are concerned that this costume will continue your oppressive tradition with a transphobic costume of Caitlyn Jenner.”
The petition goes on to explain that should the aim be to celebrate the transgender community, then Spirit Halloween “should have seriously considered trailblazers from Stonewall such as Miss Major, Marsha P Johnson, or Sylvia Rivera, but with your record of problematic costumes it seems best to avoid turning anyone in our community into a costume for your own profit. Do not turn Cailtyn Jenner into a costume. Your profit will only lead to greater transphobia and marginalization of an already at-risk community.”

One person show signed the petition wrote, “I’m signing because this costume mocks the validity of a transgender’s identity, implying a man wearing a dress is the same as a person dressing to their comfort and identity.”
Other retailers, including WholesaleCostumes.com and AnytimeCostumes.com, also carry the Caitlyn costume – but haven’t been targeted by the Change.org petition so far.
