A new portrait of the Queen has been released in honour of her birthday, as Her Majesty celebrates her 96th year today (21 April).

The photograph was released last night (20 April) on the eve of the occasion and features the Queen standing between two white ponies in the grounds of Windsor Castle.

In the images, Her Majesty wears a deep green cape-style coat and stands holding the reins of a pony on each side. A stunning row of trees studded with white flowers forms the backdrop of the image.

The photograph was taken last month and was released by the Royal Windsor Horse Show, according to a post on the official Royal Family Instagram account.

It revealed that the fell ponies featured were two of Her Majesty’s own, and added that her Majesty has attended every single Royal Windsor Horse Show event since it began in 1943, cementing her renowned love for horses.

The birthday photo is the fourth in a series of four images marking significant occasions so far; the Golden Jubilee, Platinum Jubilee and 90th birthday.

The Royal Family also shared a childhood photograph of the Queen to mark her birthday today (21 April).

The adorable photograph was taken of the then Princess Elizabeth at two years old. A caption alongside the post explained Her Majesty’s unexpected and remarkable journey to the throne.

It said that the Queen was, “was never expected to become Queen. Her life changed in 1936 when her uncle, King Edward VIII abdicated, her father became King George VI and the young Princess became the heir presumptive.”

At the age of 25, following her father’s death, Her Majesty became Queen and is now celebrating her Platinum Jubilee, marking a historic first of 70 years on the throne.

A number of events are planned to mark the Jubilee this year, including a special four day bank holiday.
