2020 was undoubtedly a year of online shopping – with high streets left largely shuttered, we all shifted our spending to the internet.

And when it comes to beauty, the most in-demand brands and products vary widely across the globe. Recent research by Cosmetify has revealed the most popular beauty brand in each country (measured using the number of Google search hits) – and some of the results may surprise you.

In the US, the most popular brand was Colorpop – a brand famed for its vivid eyeshadow shades and retina-searing lipsticks, suggesting that extensive lockdowns did not kill a collective love for make-up. In Brazil and Colombia, beauty tech line Foreo took the top spot, while Maybelline ranked high in Peru and Argentina.

In Germany and parts of Scandinavia, bath and bodycare brand Rituals was most in-demand, while niche inclusions came from Beauty Bay in Ireland, Ouai in Mali and Guinea, and Glossier in Serbia.

But the two most popular brands defy expectations. The Body Shop and Yves Rocher each stole the top spot in 32 countries, making them the most popular beauty brands of 2020. French pharmacy staple Yves Rocher, which left the UK market in 2019, was most in-demand across Central and Eastern Europe, including France, Spain, Ukraine and Turkey. The Body Shop was the most searched brand in the UK, Canada, Australia, India, Saudi Arabia and South Africa.
