Pop paedos, rock 'n' roll burglaries and SONGWRITER SHOOTERS! These music stars were all jailed...

Glam rocker Gary Glitter dominated the music charts in the UK in the 1970s and his song 'Rock and Roll Part 2 was a top 10 hit in the US, and is still a popular sports anthem to this day. His reputation came crashing down in 1999 when he was found guilty of possessing indecent images of children and then for offences even more depraved. But Glitter is far from the only pop idol to fall from grace. These music stars all served time behind bars...

Phil Spector was the pop genius behind 'Be My Baby' hitmakers The Ronettes and he masterminded their career in the 1960s. He invented the 'Wall of Sound' studio technique and went on to work with former Beatles John Lennon and George McCartney on their solo LPs. On February 3, 2003, actress Lana Clarkson was found dead in Spector’s California mansion. Spector's driver heard a gunshot before Spector exited his house through the back door with a gun. He was quoted as saying: "I think I just shot her." Spector later said Clarkson's death was an "accidental suicide". Spector was tried for the murder of Clarkson in 2007. On September 26 of that year, a mistrial was declared due to a hung jury, with 10 jurors of 12 favouring conviction. He was tried again for second-degree murder in 2008 and in 2009, the jury found Spector guilty and he was sentenced to 19 years to life in state prison. He died in prison in January 2021 after contracting COVID at the age of 81.

Michael Jackson was the King of Pop and enjoyed a career unlike any other in the 1980s with hits like 'Thriller' and 'Billie Jean'. In 1993, Jackson was accused of molesting 13-year-old Jordan Chandler at his Neverland Ranch by the boy's father Evan Chandler. The singer always denied all charges and the case was settled out of court. Separate allegations followed in 2003 involving a 12-year-old boy. If convicted, Jackson would have faced up to 20 years behind bars but the FBI were unable to find any criminal evidence and Jackson walked free.

The '90s RnB sensation was convicted in September of multiple child pornography, child trafficking and child sex abuse charges. R. Kelly, 55, was sentenced to 30 years in jail and is currently incarcerated at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago. Following his sentencing, he said: "To all my fans and supporters I love you all and thank you for all the support. Today's verdict was disappointing and I will continue to prove my innocence and fight for my freedom."

Last on the list is Kurt Cobain’s former partner and Hole frontwoman Courtney Love. Love first got in trouble with the police at the age of 14, when she was arrested for shoplifting from a Portland department store. Love has been arrested multiple times since, including for breaking several windows of her then-boyfriend James Barber's home in 2003. The singer was charged with being under the influence of a controlled substance and temporarily lost custody of her daughter.

The singer - who died on Christmas Day in 2016 at the age of 53 - was caught committing a lewd act with a man who turned out to be an undercover police officer in a Los Angeles public toilet in 1998 and was arrested for multiple drug-related offences after that time. He pleaded guilty to the offense and was fined $810 and sentenced to 80 hours of community service. In 2010, he was found guilty of driving under the influence of drugs and was sentenced to eight weeks behind bars, but only served four.

The Culture Club star landed himself in hot water in 2008 when was convicted of the April 2007 assault and false imprisonment of a model and male escort, who initially stood for a photography session for him. The 'Karma Chameleon' singer allegedly beat him with a metal chain and was sentenced to 15 months behind bars before being granted early release in April 2009.

The Libertines rocker was sentenced to six months behind bars in 2003 for breaking into bandmate Carl Barat's apartment and stealing various possessions. Although the sentence was reduced to two months, Pete found himself in jail once again in 2008 for violating the conditions of his parole and jailed for 14 weeks but was released early to reduce overcrowding. In 2010, he was put into prison once more for six months over possession of cocaine.

Nicki Minaj previously shared a mugshot on Instagram, recalling her criminal past in Queens, New York. In the now-deleted post, as reported by HipHop DX and Hot New Hip Hop, the ‘Anaconda’ singer detailed the incident, writing: "It took me years to be able to look at things like this. Criminal possession with the intent to use. I did use it tho. This is so inspiring to look back. The girl was leaking blood and spent days in the hospital [sic]." Rapper Jay-Z used Nicki’s picture on his ‘On the Run II’ 2018 tour, as part of a sequence of images showing mugshots of other hip-hop stars.

In 1978, the Sex Pistols bassist admitted to having stabbed his wife Nancy during a dispute, but retracted his statement and claimed to have been passed out on the bed when she died. He was released on bail and the case remains a mystery to this day. Sid later ended up behind bars in 1978 for assaulting Patti Smith's brother in a bar and he spent seven weeks behind bars. Shortly after being released on bail, he died of a heroin overdose at the age of just 21.

Following his 1999 imprisonment for possession of indecent images of children, the 'I'm the Leader of the Gang' hitmaker - whose real name is Paul Gadd - was jailed again. In February 2015, Glitter was imprisoned for offences carried out between 1975 and 1980, including crimes of intercourse with a girl under 13, attempting to r*** an eight-year-old and molesting a third girl. On 3 February 2023, he was released on licence after serving half of his sentence, eight years of a 16-year term. The Ministry of Justice said in a statement: "Offenders like Paul Gadd are closely monitored by the police and Probation Service and face some of the strictest licence conditions, including being fitted with a GPS tag. If the offender breaches these conditions at any point, they can go back behind bars."
