Recent events in the Trump administration have called to mind Hollywood disaster movies - although reality is even scarier than fiction. But arguably the most extraordinary cinematic artefact of the Trump era is yet to hit our screens.

Louise Linton, the Scottish wife of President Trump’s Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, stars as sociopathic bisexual Catherine Black in a new comedic thriller, Me, You, Madness, which she’s also written, directed and produced.

According to a New York Times interview, this bizarre vanity project features a drug-fuelled poolside orgy, a testicle supper, Black ingesting a live spider, and her addiction to everything from cocaine and champagne to violence and high fashion - with 42 outfit changes in a 98-minute film.

Linton calls the project - which she says has been financed by her friends and family - “a potpourri of silliness”, inspired by classic femme fatale movies.

However, the film features an eyebrow-raising casting decision: the Gossip Girl actor Ed Westwick, who, in 2017, was accused of raping two women and sexually assaulting a third. (He denied the charges, which were dropped due to insufficient evidence.)

It’s certainly not the first time that Linton has courted controversy. Her 2016 ghostwritten memoir In Congo’s Shadow: One Girl’s Perilous Journey to the Heart of Africa, recounting her volunteer work in Zambia, was lambasted for its racial insensitivity and numerous discrepancies. It was swiftly pulled from sale.

A year later, she posted a photograph on Instagram of herself and her husband disembarking a military plane, with hashtags for all her designer clothes. When criticised, she lashed out with a furious, tone-deaf rant. It came to be known as her "Marie Antoinette moment".

Linton also went viral when she posed for photos at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington, clutching a sheet of freshly printed money while wearing long leather gloves - drawing comparisons with Darth Vader and Cruella de Vil. The Washington Post since labelled her “the Trump administration’s resident supervillainess.”

Launch of the teaser trailer for Me, You, Madness - which is available on video on demand on February 12, distributed by STX Entertainment - has, says Linton, been delayed because of the “sickening” storming of the Capitol.

When asked whether Vice President Mike Pence - who officiated her marriage to Mnuchin - and his wife would be watching the orgy scene, Linton demurred that it was “probably not their cup of tea”.
