A 38-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of the murder of Sabina Nessa in south-east London, the Metropolitan Police have said. He currently remains in custody.

Police have also shared images of another man that they are searching for in connection to the crime, along with pictures of a silver car. They are also appealing to local residents for additional dashboard camera and CCTV footage.

Detective Chief Inspector Neil John said, "We would ask anyone - especially those in Kidbrooke and the wider area of Lewisham and Greenwich - to take a careful look at these images to check whether you know who this man is or have seen him over recent days.

"Any information as to his identity or whereabouts could be vital for our investigation so we are asking you to share this image far and wide to ensure as many people as possible see it."

It was over the weekend that the incredibly sad news broke that a 28-year-old teacher had been murdered in London – the woman was later identified as Sabina Nessa from Kidbrooke.

Sabina was attacked at Cator Park in south east London at around 8.30pm on Friday 17 September, however her body wasn't found until the following day (the authorities were alerted at around 5.30pm). Officers have since revealed the attack took place while she was walking just five minutes to meet her friend at a pub, The Depot in Kidbrooke Village.

Speaking about the events leading up to her tragic death, Metropolitan Police Detective Inspector, Joe Garrity, said: "Sabina never arrived at the pub and is thought to have been murdered as she walked through the park."

He continued, "Sabina’s journey should have taken just over five minutes but she never made it to her destination. We know the community are rightly shocked by this murder – as are we – and we are using every resource available to us to find the individual responsible."

Details of what happened to Sabina are still emerging, but Garrity added that officers had previously arrested a man in his 40s on suspicion of murder and that he has since been released, pending further investigation.

Following Sabina's murder, and that of Sarah Everard who was murdered earlier this year, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan is now calling for misogyny to be made a hate crime.

During an appearance on Good Morning Britain (23 September), Khan said: "We do have an epidemic when it comes to violence against women and girls – we need a whole system approach. We need to make sure at a young age boys are taught to respect girls, [that] they are taught about healthy relationships. Girls at a young age are changing the way they dress on the way to school because of the way they are treated by boys."

He continued, "I think we need to make misogyny a hate crime. I think harassment in the public space against women should be a criminal offence. I think we need to give this issue the same seriousness we give other issues."

Khan also addressed how the lived experience of men and women is vastly different. While talking to the show's host, Ben Sheppard, Khan said, "The reality is Ben, you and I have not had the lived experience as Kate [co-host Kate Garraway], my wife, my daughter and others have."

"Just going about their normal way of life they are harassed and treated in a different way simply by virtue of their sex and gender," Khan added, "I think us men have got to be allies in addressing this issue."

The Metropolitan Police are urging anyone with information relating to Sabina Nessa's murder to come forward by contacting 101 with the reference 5747/18. If you wish to remain anonymous, please contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
