Piers Morgan has gone to the police after he and his family received death threats online.

The Good Morning Britain star, 55, took action after receiving an Instagram message from someone threatening his life.

In the message - which Morgan shared with his followers on Twitter - he was warned that he was a “marked man” and was “getting killed”.

“Calling the police, big tech or beefing up your security isn’t going to stop us getting to you,” the post said. “This isn’t a threat Piers, it’s a promise, your (sic) getting killed.”

In a separate message, the TV star's wife and his son Spencer were also threatened.

Morgan told his followers: “Another day, another death threat... this one from someone using the name ‘stevienewcombe’ on Instagram.

"Anyone know who he is?

"Let’s see how big and tough he feels when I give him the exposure he deserves.”

He later shared that he had contacted the Metropolitan Police.

“UPDATE: I’ve reported these death threats to @metpoliceuk and look forward to hearing back from them," the presenter said in a post on Twitter.

"I’m also keen to hear what steps @instagram @Facebook are taking to identify the person who made the death threats on their platform & has now deleted their account."

When one person suggested that reporting the threat to the police might not lead to anything being done, Morgan said they were “definitely taking this seriously”.

“They’re round my house now taking a statement,” said the star.

Morgan has three sons from his first marriage and he and wife Celia Walden have a daughter together.
