Piers Morgan has said he is "amused" to have been shortlisted for a National Television Award five months after he left Good Morning Britain.

The 56-year-old presenter quit the ITV breakfast show GMB in March after comments he made about Meghan Markle caused a fallout with the show's bosses but continues to present Piers Morgan’s Life Stories for the channel.

The former tabloid editor - who has previously complained about being snubbed for the award - tweeted: "Most amused to finally be nominated for TV Presenter of the Year at the ⁦@OfficialNTAs - though could be a tad #awks for ITV if I win for my work on ⁦@GMB. Might have to pull a Brando and send Princess Pinocchio along to receive it on my behalf…."

Morgan, who is currently on holiday in Antigua, is referring to the 1973 Oscars ceremony when Marlon Brando won Best Actor for The Godfather. Brando boycotted the ceremony in protest against Hollywood's treatment of Native Americans - sending young Apache actress Sacheen Littelfeather on stage to make the snub for him.

Princess Pinocchio is Morgan's nickname for the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle.

Morgan has been nominated for Best Presenter at the NTAs, competing against Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, Bradley Walsh and This Morning stars Holly Willoughby and Alison Hammond.
