Piers Morgan has joked that Ant and Dec will need medical attention if he beats them at the National Television Awards (NTAs).

The former Good Morning Britain star is up against the Britain’s Got Talent duo in the TV Presenter category.

Ant and Dec have taken home the trophy 19 times in a row – but Morgan is hoping to give them a run for their money this year.

He told the Mirror: “And if they not only don’t win... [but] have to see me trotting up and raising the award, you may have to have a medical team on standby to race in and make sure they’re OK. We might need smelling salts for that one.”

Morgan said he thought it was time someone else took home the prize.

“I deserve to win because everyone’s sick and tired of Ant and Dec automatically winning this award, which bears no relation to reality,” he said.

“They’ve done nothing special in the last year, even they would admit that. I think it’s time the procession came to a shuddering halt and the Morgan bandwagon was rewarded with glory.”

Morgan stepped down from GMB in March after remarks he made about Meghan Markle sparked a record number of complaints.

Broadcasting watchdog Ofcom has now cleared the 56-year-old over the comments.
