Piers Morgan has doubled down on his vow to take a coronavirus vaccine live on air now one has been approved – and Matt Hancock has agreed to join him.

On Wednesday, news broke that the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine has been approved for roll out in the UK next week, with the health secretary appearing on Good Morning Britain the same morning.

Reiterating a promise he had already made, host Morgan said: “I would take it live on air. I don’t care, I just feel like it’s really important if we are going to get through this that enough people take it.”

The MP speaking via video link from London replied: “I’ll take it with you Piers. I think you have to show leadership in these things.”

Morgan added: “I’m serious, I’ll come to where you are, any time next week, if we can do this and let’s do it together live on air. It would be powerful. It would send the right message, If you take it, I take it, Susanna takes it, Dr Hilary takes it. I think it will have an impact.”

The UK has ordered 40 million doses of the vaccine, enough to vaccinate 20 million people with the elderly, care home workers and NHS staff among those high up on the priority list.

Hancock added that due to Morgan being a "healthy middle-aged man" he was not at the top of the prioritisation, but that he would push ahead with the plans if they could be approved.

It comes as Hancock and his family recently suffered a loss due to the virus as his step-grandfather Derek died after contracting COVID-19 in Liverpool.

He fought back tears as he told MPs about the loss of his family member when speaking in the House of Commons on Tuesday ahead of the vote on the government's tougher tier system of restrictions.
