Piers Morgan has celebrated his second birthday in lockdown with a family barbecue in his back garden.

The former Good Morning Britain host turned 56 on Tuesday 30 March and marked the occasion on the unseasonably hot spring day with cake, beer, champagne and grilled steak at his London home, surrounded by his children.

Morgan shared a photo of a cake decorated to look like the cover of his book Wake Up, captioned: "Happy 2nd lockdown Birthday... to me! Fabulous cakes from @cakeworx @harpercollinsuk & some delicious alcoholic gifts from @ultimatebozo, @maricor_flor @jamieangelise @bertie_morgan @charlotte___tomlinson & some old @gmb friends - and no need to worry about doing a breakfast show with a hangover!"

The former tabloid journalist quit the ITV breakfast show earlier this month over his refusal to apologise for saying Meghan Markle had lied in her interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Morgan also posted a picture of himself standing around the barbecue with nine-year-old daughter Elise and his three sons from his first marriage – Albert, Spencer and Stanley.

The TV presenter dubbed it the "Birthday BBQ Squad".

Morgan celebrated his last birthday alone at home with his wife Celia Walden, 45, and daughter just a week after the UK went into national lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.

He shared a picture of himself enjoying cake and wine, captioned: "All kicking off at my socially-distanced birthday party!"

Due to an ease on government restrictions which came into force this week people are now permitted to meet with up to six people or one other household in their private garden or a public outdoor space.

Morgan began co-hosting GMB with Susanna Reid in 2015 following the axing of his CNN news show Piers Morgan Live in the US in 2014 due to poor ratings.

He claims to have had multiple offers for his next presenting role, but is yet to announce what he will be doing.

Morgan left ITV's Good Morning Britain after Ofcom launched an investigation into remarks he made about the Meghan Markle on the show that sparked hundreds of thousands of complaints.

He said: “I had a good chat with ITV and we agreed to disagree. I’m just going to take it easy and see how we go.

“I believe in freedom of speech, I believe in the right to be allowed to have an opinion. If people want to believe Meghan Markle, that’s entirely their right.

“If I have to fall on my sword for expressing an honestly held opinion about Meghan Markle and that diatribe of bilge that she came out with in that interview, so be it.”
