Piers Morgan has branded Adele a "disgrace" and a "privileged, pampered prima donna" for cancelling her Las Vegas residency at just 24 hours notice.

The Easy On Me singer tearfully announced on social media last week that she was postponing her shows at the last minute because they weren't ready and apologising to all those who had already spent money on flights and accommodation.

Morgan wrote in a column in The Sun that he had been reminded of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury's song The Show Must Go On which he released when he was dying from HIV/Aids.

The 56-year-old former Good Morning Britain presenter said: "It’s a disgrace... If Freddie Mercury can make an album as he was literally dying, then she could probably have found the inner strength to pocket $500,000 a night to sing a few songs even if the set design wasn’t absolutely perfect.

"But sadly, it would appear health-obsessed Adele’s disappeared up her rapidly diminishing celebrity backside, and no amount of weeping and wailing can change that very disappointing fact."

Adele had told fans "I'm sorry, it's last minute. I'm so upset and I'm really embarrassed... I want to to get it to where it's supposed to be [but] we've been up against so much and it just ain't ready."

And she blamed the coronavirus pandemic, claiming "half my team have COVID".

But Morgan said: "It seems COVID was just a convenient excuse for the more likely truth, which is that Adele didn’t prepare properly and didn’t visit the stage before it was too late - and then threw an extended diva fit of Biblical proportions."

He compared the singer to Meghan Markle as he accused her of throwing a tantrum, citing reports that she had been unhappy with the set-design and staging and had not visited the venue for rehearsals.

And he referred to Adele's Facetime calls with disappointed fans who arrived at Caesars Palace having set off before she cancelled as "cack-handed attempts to make some pitiful amends".

Morgan said the Someone Like You singer's "great gift" had been her relatability to fans who believed she was a "working-class girl".

He added: "But now she has morphed into just another staggeringly rich, privileged, pampered prima donna who thinks it’s fine to pull the plug on months of shows at a moment’s notice because she can’t get everything she demands."
