Pierce Brosnan on 007: Idris Elba or Tom Hardy Should Play James Bond Next

Who will play the next James Bond? The question has fascinated fans ever since November 2019, when Daniel Craig revealed that No Time to Die – out this Thursday – would mark his departure from the role.

With a serious shortage of solid insider intel to draw from, who better to predict the future face of the franchise than a former 007? If you're asking four-time Bond star Pierce Brosnan, his money's on Luther star Idris Elba and Venom actor Tom Hardy.

"Idris Elba comes to mind," the Irish actor told People magazine. "Idris is such a powerful presence and such a great former voice tensity. He would be magnificent. There's Tom Hardy out there as well. Tom can really chew the furniture up, just be a ball boy – both men can."

Before the rumour mill goes into overdrive, Brosnan – who played Bond in GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough and Die Another Day between 1995 and 2002, before being succeeded by Craig – clarified that he has "no idea" who producers would choose to play the much-loved English spy. "Now that Daniel has left such an indelible footprint, they can go in many different ways," he added. "But your guess is as good as mine, who's going to be the next Bond. There's no other franchise like it. Nothing."

Guess we'll have to wait and see. Until then, it might be best to quit quizzing Brosnan about who should don the iconic tuxedo. "Sometimes it becomes wearisome," he admitted – but in the next breath, added that he understands why fans are keen to hear his views.

"You have to get over that and celebrate it as a member of the audience and as a man who has kind of walked that walk and played that part," he said. "Bond will live on here."
