PICS: Space-Smart Ideas to Steal from this Chic Mumbai Apartment
How do you get an apartment to stand out in a cookie-cutter residential complex? How do you make the most of a 1,150-square-foot unit? How do you create a space that’s social and private? These were some of the questions that architect Nishita Kamdar was faced with while designing a suburban, 3BHK residence in Mumbai. “The family of four wanted a space that was an extension of their personalities; both, simple and modern,” says Kamdar who heads Studio Nishita Kamdar.
The design approach was two-fold. First, brick walls across all social areas were gutted to create an open-plan living, dining and kitchen space. Next, a minimalist material palette of wood and glass was employed to subtly demarcate various functional zones. Fluted glass, for instance, screens off the third bedroom and kitchen from the living cum dining area; while making the space appear larger. In the kitchen, the panels slide in or out, as required. Similarly, a wenge veneer and pine baton cladding highlights the dining area, extending into the passage where it conceals doors to the mandir and storage room. Wooden surface claddings offer visual continuity in all three bedroom, while glass features as accessories like lighting fixtures, vases, photo frames, etc. The home’s simple, neutral canvas is punctuated by a chic curation of decor and soft furnishings by well-loved labels like Gulmohar Lane, Good Earth, Humming Haus, The Kaleido Store, Cottons and Satins, etc. Most of the furniture was custom designed by Studio Nishita Kamdar.
