“Who do you represent, Ivanka? There the 35 year-old sat, flanked by the political heavy-weights Angela Merkel and Christine Lagarde, betraying the merest hint of nerves as she embarked on the first foreign event in her new official capacity: Adviser to the President. The W20 summit – designed to promote women’s economic empowerment – was a coming out of sorts for Ivanka, and a high pressure one at that.
Ten years ago, everyone was obsessed with reducing their fat intake and supermarket chains were brimming with low-fat products. Cardiologist, heart surgeon, and autoimmune disease expert Steven Gundry says that often the most nutrient-packed foods are the ones causing people digestion issues. In an article for Mind Body Green, Gundry explains that there’s one particular plant protein creating problems for our guts: lectin.
Vegemite, a pufferfish, Billy Ray Cyrus, marijuana, Saturn (not Jupiter): This eclectic array of seemingly unrelated people, places, and things all have one thing in common, which is that they’ve earned a permanent spot on Miley Cyrus’s body. The star has a generous amount of ink, and many of the pieces have special meaning. That jar of brewer’s yeast spread, for example, is a nod to Liam Hemsworth ’s homeland; the prickly fish is for her pet puffer that passed. (Try saying that three times fast.) "Becoming a mother scares me," wrote a Reddit user in the AskWomen subreddit. Did their children keep them from living the life they wanted? The redditor ended her post with one request: "Please tell me your stories honestly." Her readers complied, and then some.
Taylor Swift, Emma Watson - and pose for a selfie. This week, Chancellor Angela Merkel was asked during a panel discussion at the Berlin W20 women's empowerment summit whether she called herself a feminist. Unlike fellow attendee Ivanka Trump, Merkel did not immediately say 'yes'.
Your head is pounding, the room’s spinning and your stomach is lurching - when you’re hungover, reaching for painkillers can often seem like a good idea.

A Canadian school is attempting to ban all talk of 13 Reasons Why, reports CBC News. The Selena Gomez-produced series is about a high school student who dies by suicide and leaves behind tapes describing the 13 reasons for her choice. According to Buzzfeed, the Hamilton Wentworth District School Board in Ontario posted a message on their website stating that the series provided "glamorisation of suicide." Several other schools, in both the United States and Canada, have released similar messages, though St. Vincent's Ghali seems to be the first to call for a ban of all talk related to the series.
Mountains are good for a racer like me – a pretty good sprinter, not so good at time trials but with not much weight (Voeckler is 5ft 9in tall and weighs 66kg). When you get to the mountains, if you have good legs and a great mentality, this is the place where you can fight and make your different moves.
As the greenery trend rumbles on, chances are you haven't got any better at keeping your house plants alive. By and large, the big winner of the greenery trend (alongside the palm, which has dominated the house plant market over the past few years) has been the terrarium.
This week we've been championing sustainable fashion and investigating the sad facts that the fashion industry relies on cheap fabric, exploitative labour and a lengthy, complicated supply chain. Things are, however, changing slowly – the combined effect of new legislation, increased consumer awareness and the tireless work of non-profit organisations like Fashion Revolution. It may sound an unachievable mission but a new generation of design talent is proving that, with enough creativity and commitment, clothing can be both innovative and sustainably made.
When Emmanuel Macron fell in love with Brigitte Trogneux, a married teacher at his school, it caused something of a stir. In this extract from her biography of the French presidential candidate, the author reveals the reaction of Macron's parents...
A former BBC reporter, Clarence Mitchell was appointed to assist Kate and Gerry McCann as their media spokesman following the disappearance of their daughter, Madeleine, in Portugal in 2007. Ja Rule has responded to the chaos unfolding at his highly anticipated music festival, saying he is “heartbroken” by the situation. The hip-hop star had billed the festival, called Fyre Festival, as an upscale Coachella, complete with “first-class culinary experiences and a luxury atmosphere.” The event boasted stars such as G.O.O.D. Music, Migos, Lil Yachty, and Major Lazer, and an enviable location in Exumas, Bahamas. Despite its ostentatious billing, attendees arrived at Fyre Festival to find a dishevelled array of tents, rows of port-a-potties, and meals consisting largely of white bread and cheese slices.
It was on an ill-fated trip to see the Northern Lights in February that I was first exposed to the concept of “cheeky exploits”. As a vague vapour trail-like mark moved across the sky (unless the Northern Lights are strong, the naked eye will most likely see them in mono and the green hue will only be picked up by cameras, which don’t see with rods and cones), one of our group put down his equipment. Hurray, I thought – someone else is going to look at the Northern Lights with their eyes, instead of a wide lense – and then he started taking off his clothes.
Passengers on Britain’s premier rail line can now buy Advance train tickets as little as two hours before departure — dramatically reducing the cost of travel between London, Yorkshire and Scotland. Virgin Trains East Coast has abandoned its former restriction of one minute to midnight the day before travel. Instead, the new deadline is two hours before departure.
The northern rim of the Grand Canyon and a coastal region in Maine, home to rare turtles and whales, are among the 24 national monuments that US President Donald Trump has asked his interior secretary to review, in a move some fear could see areas of natural beauty mined and drilled for resources. Mr Trump signed the executive order to re-assess monuments at the Interior Department on Wednesday 26 April, labelling the designation of national monuments as a “massive federal land grab” by past administrations. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke must now re-consider the status of monuments established under the Antiquities Act after 1996.
Swiss freerider Sam Anthamatten drops in, makes a couple of turns down what looks like a near vertical slope, aims for a seemingly intractable rock band, pauses, jumps it, flies on, jumps again, spinning through 360 degrees – but then crashes hard and tumbles head over heels several times before stopping… and then getting up again to continue. This is the final of the annual Freeride World Tour ski and snowboard competition, taking place on the rocky north face of the 3,223m Bec des Rosses in Verbier, Switzerland. There are naturally no pistes on this mega mountain, which has hosted the Xtreme Verbier competition for 22 years, and most routes down are over 50-degrees of intimidating steepness.
After a quick 30-minute theory class at Amieira Marina, situated on the south side of the lake, followed by a practical lesson of the same speed, you’ll be off out on the water, completely unaided and able to drive your boat wherever the wind takes you.
As much as we love online shopping, it can definitely be hit or miss. All you have to do is put in your height, weight, and how you want the item to fit (tighter, perfect, or looser), and voilà — your chances of your order fitting exactly how you'd like it to are that much higher.
Protein is composed of small compounds called amino acids which are the building blocks of muscle mass. The other nine essential amino acids – so called because your body can’t synthesise them – you must get from food. Animal sources of protein (milk, yogurt, cheese, meat, poultry, fish, seafood and eggs) are considered “complete proteins”, meaning they contain all essential amino acids.
