The Clothes Show Live 2012 has kicked off in Birmingham, with the likes of Daisy Lowe, Henry Holland and Mark Fast opening the event. Here we bring you all the style in pictures...
A former BBC reporter, Clarence Mitchell was appointed to assist Kate and Gerry McCann as their media spokesman following the disappearance of their daughter, Madeleine, in Portugal in 2007. Here is his incredible account of the youngster's disappearance, the police operation to find her and the subsequent 10 years of anguish.... The first moment came very early on, just weeks after her disappearance on May 3, 2007.
Ja Rule has responded to the chaos unfolding at his highly anticipated music festival, saying he is “heartbroken” by the situation. The hip-hop star had billed the festival, called Fyre Festival, as an upscale Coachella, complete with “first-class culinary experiences and a luxury atmosphere.” The event boasted stars such as G.O.O.D. Music, Migos, Lil Yachty, and Major Lazer, and an enviable location in Exumas, Bahamas. Despite its ostentatious billing, attendees arrived at Fyre Festival to find a dishevelled array of tents, rows of port-a-potties, and meals consisting largely of white bread and cheese slices.
It was on an ill-fated trip to see the Northern Lights in February that I was first exposed to the concept of “cheeky exploits”. As a vague vapour trail-like mark moved across the sky (unless the Northern Lights are strong, the naked eye will most likely see them in mono and the green hue will only be picked up by cameras, which don’t see with rods and cones), one of our group put down his equipment. Hurray, I thought – someone else is going to look at the Northern Lights with their eyes, instead of a wide lense – and then he started taking off his clothes.
Passengers on Britain’s premier rail line can now buy Advance train tickets as little as two hours before departure — dramatically reducing the cost of travel between London, Yorkshire and Scotland. Virgin Trains East Coast has abandoned its former restriction of one minute to midnight the day before travel. Instead, the new deadline is two hours before departure.
The northern rim of the Grand Canyon and a coastal region in Maine, home to rare turtles and whales, are among the 24 national monuments that US President Donald Trump has asked his interior secretary to review, in a move some fear could see areas of natural beauty mined and drilled for resources. Mr Trump signed the executive order to re-assess monuments at the Interior Department on Wednesday 26 April, labelling the designation of national monuments as a “massive federal land grab” by past administrations. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke must now re-consider the status of monuments established under the Antiquities Act after 1996.
Swiss freerider Sam Anthamatten drops in, makes a couple of turns down what looks like a near vertical slope, aims for a seemingly intractable rock band, pauses, jumps it, flies on, jumps again, spinning through 360 degrees – but then crashes hard and tumbles head over heels several times before stopping… and then getting up again to continue. This is the final of the annual Freeride World Tour ski and snowboard competition, taking place on the rocky north face of the 3,223m Bec des Rosses in Verbier, Switzerland. There are naturally no pistes on this mega mountain, which has hosted the Xtreme Verbier competition for 22 years, and most routes down are over 50-degrees of intimidating steepness.
After a quick 30-minute theory class at Amieira Marina, situated on the south side of the lake, followed by a practical lesson of the same speed, you’ll be off out on the water, completely unaided and able to drive your boat wherever the wind takes you.
As much as we love online shopping, it can definitely be hit or miss. All you have to do is put in your height, weight, and how you want the item to fit (tighter, perfect, or looser), and voilà — your chances of your order fitting exactly how you'd like it to are that much higher.
Protein is composed of small compounds called amino acids which are the building blocks of muscle mass. The other nine essential amino acids – so called because your body can’t synthesise them – you must get from food. Animal sources of protein (milk, yogurt, cheese, meat, poultry, fish, seafood and eggs) are considered “complete proteins”, meaning they contain all essential amino acids.
For anyone who has the flexibility to book a last-minute break in Europe, this is a great time to travel. A slight hiccup follows in the form of half-term, which incorporates the spring bank holiday and this year kicks off on Saturday May 27 (in some cases a week later), then there are at least five weeks before the schools break up in early July, and peak season really begins.
As President Trump hits the the 100-day mark, many polls and pundits are giving the commander-in-chief marks of their own. Just 10% of those surveyed gave Trump an A. Throughout the campaign season last year, Refinery29 talked to young Republican women from across the country about their party’s nominee and the political issues they cared about most.
Trump centred his entire campaign on vilifying immigrants, and his administration undoubtedly proved it cares more about an anti-immigrant agenda than protecting women in its first 100 days. Case in point: The Department of Homeland Security announced a new office formed under Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to help victims of violent crimes committed by undocumented immigrants. The Victims of Immigration Crime Engagement (VOICE) will "support victims of crimes committed by criminal aliens through access to information and resources," according to its website, and will operate a hotline to answer victims' questions (which was immediately spammed with calls about UFOs).
The palm-sized portals come with us everywhere, including on holiday, where they are used, among other things, to take our photographs, book our taxis, message our friends and update our social media feeds.
Europe seems to be obsessed with the attire of Muslim women. Last month, the European Court of Justice ruled against two Muslim women from France and Belgium, upholding the right of their employers to ban them from wearing headscarves. In many cases these bans will affect people, who aren't Muslim women, but in reality they will primarily affect Muslim women. These bans will be touted as an accomplishment by the far Right across Europe, who decry headscarves not only as oppressive but as a threat to social cohesion which is incompatible with secular vehicles.
Singer Zara Larsson does not. Thursday night, Paris Jackson joined the conversation with a lengthy post on Instagram, as People reports. The teen icon, daughter to the late Michael Jackson, shared a screenshot of a Tumblr conversation about the show.
As the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge prepare to celebrate their sixth wedding anniversary we get a body language expert to analyse their changing relationship.
Google whipped up something extra cheesy with today's doodle. The click-through doodle illustrates the creation of Camembert cheese and celebrates Marie Harel, the dairymaid credited with first developing the cheese in 1791. According to Google's Doodle blog, Harel had a chance encounter that made the soft, earthy cheese you spread over crackers a reality.
The blue “Please offer me a seat” badges and accompanying cards are aimed at people with hidden health problems and are being rolled out after a successful trial on 1,200 people in September, the BBC reported. The scheme was created after demand from travellers whose hidden conditions meant they struggled to get a seat on the tube. The scheme is reportedly the first in Europe to officially recognise hidden conditions on public transport.
Hidden down a quiet street in Berlin's Prenzlauer Berg district you'll find a chic hotel that's making quite a splash – just be sure to keep an eye out or you might walk straight past it. Hotel Oderberger is housed within an imposing brick building (with a very discreet sign) that for almost a century served as a public bathhouse.
