Celebrities who beat Cancer

Kylie Minogue: The Australian pop-star was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 37. It was an aggressive form of cancer and Kylie had to go through 8 months of chemotherapy and surgeries. In an emotional interview, she revealed how she was misdiagnosed at first which led to the cancer becoming more aggressive. Apart from medical aid, she also used other alternatives like Reiki, nutrition, visualization practices, etc. to battle the disease.

Lisa Ray: Lisa Ray was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, considered fatal, in 2009. After her chemotherapy sessions, she went in for a stem cell transplant, and was finally free of the disease. Despite suffering from such a rare form of cancer, Ray never cowered, and fought the disease all the way.

Christina Applegate: Christina Applegate had to undergo treatment for breast cancer in the year 2008. The cancer was detected early and, the star was able to recover successfully. Applegate’s mum was also a breast cancer survivor, and she opted for double mastectomy to be safe.

Yuvraj Singh: Despite the shock that followed the discovery of lung cancer, Yuvi gathered himself together and fought determinedly against the disease. He drew inspiration from former cancer survivor Lance Armstrong throughout his treatment. Following his triumphant return home, Yuvi expressed his desire to motivate and inspire people suffering from cancer.

Sheryl Crow: Sheryl Crow joined the long list of celebrities diagnosed with breast cancer, in 2006. She had to undergo a minimally invasive surgery and radiation therapy to be cured of the disease. According to the singer, the disease made her re-evaluate life; she adopted a baby the next year.

Melissa Etheridge: American rock singer, Melissa Eltheridge was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004. Right in the middle of her chemotherapy sessions she was nominated for a Grammy. The disease did not stop her from performing at the Grammys. Her rendition of Janis Joplin's 'Piece of my Heart' not only won her a lot of praise and admiration but also inspired people affected by cancer.

Nelson Mandela: The South African leader was treated for prostate cancer at the age of 83, in 2001. Mandela was given a 7-week course of radiation treatment, following which he was cured of the disease. He is 93 now and his cancer has shown no signs of coming back.

Rod Stewart: Rod Stewart was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 1999, and due to the cancer's slow growth, he underwent surgery in 2001. The surgery had a major impact on his voice and he, reportedly, had to learn how to sing again. Stewart made a full recovery after which he devoted himself to the cause of raising awareness about cancer. Stewart has since been raising funds for 'The City of Hope Foundation', so that all forms of cancer can be cured.

Sharon Osbourne: Reality TV star Sharon Osbourne was detected with colon cancer and treated for it in 2002. Osbourne recovered after undergoing minor surgery and chemotherapy. She found the 'Sharon Osbourne Colon Cancer Program' in a bid to provide help to other people with the illness.

Lance Armstrong: The cycling legend was diagnosed testicular cancer in 1996. His diagnosis was made rather late, by which time, it had spread to his lungs, stomach and brain and his chances of survival were penned at 40%. Thanks to his strong spirit and support from well wishers, Armstrong turned his life around and emerged victorious in his battle against cancer. He opened the 'Lance Armstrong Foundation' in 1997 to assist cancer patients and their families all over the world.
